Project Duration: 2 months

Project Location: Buea, Cameroon

The Skilled Workforce project aimed to bridge the gap between the educational qualifications of youths in Buea and the practical skills required in the job market. The program was conducted over two months, focusing on providing training in high-demand fields such as digital marketing, software development, and project management. Special emphasis was placed on empowering young women aged 15-25 to promote gender equality in the workforce.

The program commenced with an orientation session highlighting the objectives and activities. During this period, the youths underwent intensive training, which focused on attendance, punctuality, and professional attitude. Emphasis was placed on practical experience where trainees were actively involved in hands-on projects. The digital management and software development trainees were mentored by Fexify. GG TECH’s team handled the project management training, providing real-world experience through community projects. Social activities were held to foster better teamwork and interpersonal skills. Trainees not only gained practical skills but also improved typing proficiency using the Mavis Beacon application, showing significant progress.

Throughout the training, the student participants faced several challenges such as the interruption for 2 weeks caused by political instability and the pressure to meet strict attendance and work ethic requirements. However, the program’s outcome far outweighed these challenges. At the end of the program, 8 girls and 8 boys had successfully acquired valuable skills, with 9 trainees becoming digital marketers, 3 software developers, and 4 project managers. The project managers not only learned the essentials of project management but also successfully structured and presented their own project ideas, demonstrating their grasp of the taught concepts.

The program concluded on October 4, 2024, and each trainee who completed the training received a certificate of acknowledgement. Many trainees returned to school, while others secured jobs, continued to acquire more skills, or became freelancers, significantly enhancing their employability and professional capabilities. The project’s success was marked by its positive impact on the participants and its contributions towards reducing youth unemployment in Buea.
