The seminar was organized by GoGreen Technologies, took place on 10/11/2024 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the University of Buea (Amphitheatre 250) with over 250 participants. The event served as an engaging and informative introduction to the program, setting a clear direction for the upcoming training sessions and ensuring participants were adequately prepared.
The seminar began with Mr. Desmond Fai, GoGreen Technologies’ IT Specialist, who introduced the organization and its mission. He explained the purpose of the EYODS project, emphasizing its role in equipping youths, especially young girls, with vital digital skills to navigate a technology-driven world. His presentation provided a foundation for understanding how digital sustainability can create opportunities for personal growth and community development. Participants actively engaged, asking questions such as,
- “What is digital sustainability, and why is it important?”
- “How will this program help us in real-life applications?” and so on
Mr Desmond clarified that digital sustainability ensures technology is used responsibly to create long-term societal benefits and highlighted the program’s focus on teaching practical skills applicable to both academic and career contexts.
The second speaker, Mr. Awejan Emmanuel, Executive Director of GoGreen Technologies, delivered a presentation on the program’s significance. He stressed the importance of participants taking the training seriously, aligning it with GoGreen Technologies’ mission to empower youths and address global challenges through innovative solutions. Participants were eager to learn about the opportunities the program could unlock, asking questions like,
- “How does this program align with GoGreen Technologies’ goals?”
- “What opportunities could emerge from completing this program?” and many others
In this line, Mr. Emmanuel explained that the training contributes to sustainability and capacity building, providing skills that are in demand globally and opening doors to careers in technology, entrepreneurship, and sustainability-related fields.
The final session was led by Ms Ngonge Meiva, President of the GoGreen Technologies Club at the University of Buea. She provided a detailed outline of the training courses and their requirements while offering guidance on how to select courses based on participants’ interests and career goals. She emphasized the importance of commitment to their selected courses, encouraging participants to make thoughtful choices. Questions like,
- “What are the specific requirements for each course?”
- “How do I decide which course to take?” were addressed, with Ms Ngonge explaining that the requirements include basic software skills, a laptop, and active engagement. She also advised participants to assess their career aspirations to choose the most suitable course.
At the conclusion of the seminar, participants received the necessary software for their courses. Those unable to collect the software were encouraged to visit the GoGreen Technologies office between Tuesday and Saturday (8:00 AM – 6:00 PM) to ensure they were ready for the effective classes scheduled to begin on 17/11/2024.
The seminar was a resounding success, serving as a vital orientation for the Educating Youths on Digital Sustainability with emphasis on the girl child (EYODS) Cohort 4 program. It provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the program’s objectives, structure, and significance, ensuring they were well-prepared for the upcoming training. The interactive nature of the event, marked by insightful questions and clear, practical answers, demonstrated the participants’ enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.
Hosting this seminar was crucial as it set the tone for the entire program, fostering a sense of purpose and commitment among the participants while addressing their initial queries. By aligning their expectations and equipping them with the necessary resources, the seminar not only inspired confidence but also reinforced the importance of digital skills in creating sustainable opportunities for the youth, particularly young girls.
